THE POSSIBILITY OF SACRIFICE

While waiting for the door to their room to get fixed, Purdue and Oliver made a stop at the other end of the contestant chambers where Nina and August were staying. They were practically on the other side of the facility and far enough away not to have heard all of the disturbances that had transpired that night.

When Purdue and Ollie knocked on the door, August could barely even speak to them when he opened it because he was yawning so much, having been sleeping like a baby. They got Nina up and explained all of the recent events to her. They left out the part where Oliver had nearly killed Myron, which Purdue was sure that his fighter appreciated.

Once they got to the big bit of news that August would next be fighting Smythe, the entire energy of the room changed. It shifted to a dour sense of worry and understandably so. It seemed like August had just been summoned to stand in front of a firing squad.

“I have to fight that guy next?” August looked grave and completely beside himself with worry, like he was about to throw up right then and there. “Seriously?”

They all had hoped that they could pull off their heist before anyone had to go into an impossible fight, but it seemed that they had run out of time. There was an understanding between all of them that it meant that they would have to hasten their plans, but even then, they probably would not be able to get that sword before August had to fight Smythe. It would take a miracle to pull something like that off.

“This is bad...” Nina said. “Very, very bad.”

Oliver chimed in, probably realizing that if Smythe was fighting August next, then he likely wouldn’t be far beyond. Despite his experience as a fighter, even he seemed pretty scared by the possibility of having to face Smythe in the arena.

“You guys are part of some big secret society club or whatever, yeah? Why don’t you call in all of them as the cavalry and just raid this place? We wouldn’t have to sneak around or get into the ring with that lunatic, any of it.”

“That’s not how the Order of the Black Sun works,” Nina said.

“Well, why not?” Oliver asked. “It’s better than us just winging some sort of theft or letting August get torn apart by that guy, isn’t it?”

“Even if we wanted to...the Order of the Black Sun does not have the numbers to make that happen, or to at least do it effectively.” Purdue did his best to try to explain the Black Sun’s limitations without revealing too much about them. “There are members all over the world at any given point of time. We can’t just rally them all to this location at the snap of our fingers. No, this is up to us, and we need to be the ones to get the sword.”

“Honestly, Purdue, I don't mind just cutting our losses and getting out of this place,” Nina said.
